Well of course it could screw up the finish if you're not careful. In the assorted blade pack there are some with rounded profiles, I'd use one of them. Just cut the gasket and don't let the blade contact the cases or parts on either side.

If the X-acto blade doesn't work, try a Sharpie marker. I won't tell anybody

Boy that thing is turning out really nice :-)
Which carbs are those? I think I had a set like that once with a flat slide. They made a big difference on the mid range and top end. that thing is going to have some serious power :-)

I have those flat slides, but you learn as you go... will set up mu bike so they fit and set them up to run. Then I will break out my old set of Lectron carbs and refurbish them... those and a set of open Hooker headers made alot of power back then.

LOL! I'll bet it did :-)
I really liked the flat sides for the power but they weren’t much for going slow. My experience was as soon as you cracked them open they were kind of on or off without much feathering between but, the mid range power band was fantastic and top end was good too.

This is what I rolled out of my garage on it's way for some fabrication and to fix some stuff that's been lingering for years... 1. Battery box, made a mock-up out of foam board... Having it bent and welded up 2. Handle bars... going to have a set fabbed 1" dia.,very similar to what I have with a set of 2" risers. 3. Swing arm should have been stretched on the original build... have to do some thinking on shock rake and location of bottom mount. If I rake the shocks the top of the shock won't let the shock rotate back, If I can't remedy that I will move the mount location on the swingarm to retain stock geometry. Desired effect is to center the wheel in the rear fender (It is fully fwd in this pic). Will stretch stock chainguard and do something cool with the brake linkage... no bending of the rear brake lever on the drum as I've seen done... 4. The gas tank needs some work and I'd like to go back to a previous configuration of losing the tabs and stud mounting it from the tunnel... petcock locations are no good gotta move those too. 5. Misc welding and minor brackets to be added... Anyway it's in the shop... Arie Van Schyndel of Hot Rod Havoc fame is doing the fab work at his shop in San Marcos. I've seen his work and am very excited to see some of his ideas at work. Anyway... yea someday I might have to actually start it up... Yo, Rod

Looks good Rod!
Is that a 64 spoke front wheel?
A Radian swing arm is about an inch longer than the stock XS650 swing arm, but they aren't cheap when you see them on ebay. I have an FZR 600 swing arm on my 82. It took some modification to the swing arm and exhaust hangers to get it to fit. FZR 600 is about 1.5 inches longer and it works well but weighs about the same as the other, so I have pretty much decided to make one out of 6061 aluminum to replace it. It's just a matter of finding the time. I wonder what the length of the SR500 swing arm Moto Lana sells is? When you look at the price of 1/2 inch plate used for a swing arm jig all other swing arm options seem worth consideration.

That is not a 64 spoke hub... but it will be Did you do a thread on your swingarm conversion Richard? Some info would be cool... bearings? bushings? brake modifications etc...

I never did a thread on it. The rear brake master cylinder and linkage is not mounted yet. I plan to replicate the whole swing arm in 6061 aluminum to cut down the weight. I just kind of work on it as I get time. the fzr pivot point and center spacer had to be cut down 4mm per side and the mono shock was eliminated. I'm still thinking about which choice I want to go with since I now have a syncrowave TIG. I used to weld aircraft parts with TIG so it's a slam dunk except building a ridged jig 1/2 inch plate is getting kind of pricy these days

Richard... start a thread on that bike... sitting here with a huge smile on my face bro. How'd you get that front end on there... sheeiit bro... walk us through it You spin your own neck stem or what? Then you can tell us about the rear end... and the replication.

LOL ! Pedals would be cool :-) I would do a thread, but it’s Just a Mock up that is going to change drastically until I decide how I want it. I wanted dual shocks on the rear, but now am thinking about mounting a monoshock . I want the swingarm as light as possible and I’m still figuring that part out.

Rod it looks like you were able to use the 64 spoke hub? What the size of the front rim ended up being?
