Just bought a non-runner 76/77 xs650 and I have no ignition key but want to try getting it running before spending lots of money on it. If I just want to get it powered up to start the engine and not actually to ride at the moment is there any way to short out the ignition wiring just to get power to the coils for spark and maybe power to the starter motor? Any help welcome. I understand ignition keys can be copied or created from the code on the ignition switch barrel, think I try to source that aswell but Im keen to get her started first. Bill

Welcome, Bill! It's easily done. In the headlight shell, a solid red wire carries power from the battery to the ignition switch, a brown wire carries power out of the ignition switch to accessories and the kill switch, and a red/white wire carries power out of the kill switch to the ignition and starter solenoid. If you jump solid red to red/white in the headlight shell, you'll have power to ignition and solenoid only.
