Here it is. My 1980 Yamaha XS650 Special!
I bought this bike from a co-worker last fall for $450. Actually it was his brother's. He drove it once and crashed it, very minor. The bike was too big for him apparently. He claimed that it only sat for a year, but I think more. It was under a very holey tarp in his Dad's yard. It was covered in surface rust spots. I think some squirrels made it their home, because When I took it apart, acorns where falling out of the weirdest places. The engine had pretty good compression, and everything else was there. Except the throttle was all busted. So I made it my winter Project.
Replaced parts include;
Just about everything in the carbs was replaced.
Air Filters
Headlight rim
Headlight
Front Turn signals
New ambers in the rear turn signals
New tail light
All new ignition, including spark plugs, wires, and coil.
Used Throttle Assembly, repainted.
Repainted break and clutch perch.
New cables (Throttle and clutch)
New stickers, i.e. engine on/off, lights, turn signals, master cylinder
Used speedometer
New Grips
New mirrors
Seat cover
The tank was in pretty bad shape, so I bought a gently used one off of Ebay, fixed a couple of dents and had it painted professionally.
Repainted the frame and side covers.
Front and rear Brake sensors (makes the taillight light up when you use brakes)
Secured the wiring
All the chrome was cleaned up with scratchy pads and polished.
All the aluminium (rear grab bar, engine covers, and forks) was sanded, polished and painted with clear coat.
There's probably stuff I can't remember, I did so much. There are two more things I'd like to do. The tires show very little weather cracking and will be replaced soon, plus the swing arm bushings. I have the bushings and will do that when I take the wheels off to replace the tires. I had a lot of help from the xs650forum.proboards18.com, MikesXs.com, 650motorcycles.com, and 650central.com.
As for the rest of the summer. I have a tree house to finish. Then this winter and other XS650, this time I'm building a custom Bobber bike. See www.bratstyle.com/custom/custom.htm
