Hello, I am brand new to this forum. I recently just bought my first 1977 Yamaha xs650. I bought it from a gentleman that had intensions of turning it into a bobber. It was left partially apart and not running for about 11 years. He had installed a Hugh’s pma and also an electronic ignition. For the sake of getting the motor running I did not hook up the pma and am only running it off the electron if ignition and a battery. After thoroughly cleaning the carbs and checking over the motor I was able to get it running, but it only wants to run on choke and the second you take it off choke it just wants to die no matter what you do. If you hold the choke in the half way position the bike will kind of idle but not well. There is a lot of popping coming from the left side exhaust which I am assuming is a lean condition? I bench synced the carbs and set the mixture screw to spec for starting and also adjusted the floats to spec. No matter what you adjust the mixture screw to, it does not help the situation, it only makes it worse. I have checked the intake boots for cracks and all other locations around the motor for air leaks. I verified the timing was correct and also checked the clearances of the intake and exhaust valves which were all in Spec. It will start first or second kick on full choke but if you try to start it on no choke it will only fire with starting fluid and then die shortly after. While it’s running on full choke the rpm’s are pretty high up. Is there anything I am overlooking or recommendations onto what I should do next? Any help would be appreciated. Thanks in advance.
