I have just got my "81" xs cleaned up and running. Starts right up with the "choke" on. Will idle with the choke off when warmed up but one twist of the throttle and the revs run up to about 2500-3000 and won't come back down. The left carb is popping occasionally and plug shows it is running rich on that side. I cleaned the left side bowl and replaced the plug over the pilot jet. Pulled and cleaned the jets and shot through the passages with cleaner. Float valve seems to be working OK. Pulled the choke plunger and cleaned that and it is working correctly. The only real clue is if I put a finger over the pilot air jet in the mouth of the carb the problem goes away. The bike will idle and take the throttle and return to idle. Take finger off the pilot air jet and up goes the revs. Also gas shows up at the pilot air jet if finger is left for any length of time Any thoughts would be appreciated.

I think your pilot circuit on that left carb is still partially plugged. Yes, the jet is clean, but the passageways leading into the main bore may not be completely cleared. You also made no mention of removing the mix screw. You really can't do a proper idle circuit cleaning with it still installed.

I had a carb do that, a 4 hr boil in Pinesol followed with an overnight sitting in the mix, followed with a spray of carb cleaner and 100 lb air compressor dry, Make sure to move the throttle to open up the run circuit from the idle circuit. plus they come out looking like brand new. I used a 60/40 mix with Distilled water.60% Pinesol.
