G Man, nice pipes in the image gallery (i'm so excited I finally figured out how to get to it-duh!) did you use high-temp paint on the pipes? powdercoat? mac headers? they look good.

Hey Brando: That's my lead tech Jim's bike. It's a 1977 XS650 he bought brand new! He's been all across the country over the decades. He has had other units, but never gave up the XS. Nowadays, it's his only street legal bike. He has a garage full of off road stuff etc... I am pretty sure Jim made the header pipes and painted them rattle can high heat black. They have held out for quite a few years now. The mufflers are universal aftermarket reverse megaphones that we each bought for fairly cheap. I forget the price exactly, but can find out if you are interested. On the single exhaust I made for my SR500, one muffler sounds pretty decent (slightly loud) but on the XS's they really bark! All in all though, if you could re-use some stock headers, you could make up a system that sounds really well and performs as good as any regular duty full exhaust system. The reverse megaphone design does the job nicely.

Groovy. I am still tossing around ideas, but I am leaning towards a pair of supertrapps exiting high like a sportbike...however, the specific style I want don't show up on Ebay too often, and to buy new would be a crime @ $16something a piece.

We refurbished a set of 4 into 1 supertrap headers by using good old fashioned "stove black" bought at the hardware store. It's made for the old fashioned pot belly stoves. We treated the headers with the stove black and then fired up the bike, the heat properly cured the stove black and made a rugged flat black finish. The header pipes were black to begin with, so it made the treatment easier, all we had to do was sand and wire brush them a bit before the treatment. Bkrman
