I felt it a shame to have a forum with no threads, so here goes. I was on 650motorcycles.com and saw a really cool exhaust that turned out to be homemade (bummer for us). it was "machine gun" style, and a heat shield had been applied to the outside of the exhaust pipe, low and straight, on each side. pretty cool. i've decided, since 1) the right side pipe is rotten on the bottom, and 2) the engine needs a little "pepping up" to go with some shorty mufflers low on each side. Chrome I guess. Maybe i'll get them cooked. anyhow, who sells short slip on mufflers? I don't want supertrapps or megaphones or anything, just some little ones, slightly quieter than straight pipes. i've seen some on triumphs before.
What's the best sounding exhaust you've ever heard on a 650? there used to be a video on ironcross.net, deep in the threads somewhere, or a triumph in Europe that sounded really sweet.

Dennis Kirk, JC Whitney, and Mikesxs all sell the aftermarket shorty mufflers you are looking for. Keep in mind you will have to tune your bike for the shorty mufflers...like re-jet and most likely cooler plugs. The XS650 sound is not exactly like an old Trumpy, but it still sounds good with shortys. Hope your neighbors won't mind ;D

a friend of mine talked me into putting in a crossover pipe, too. I was thinking about rejetting anyhow, to match the increased air flow i expect form an upgrade to K&N's. Do you know how many points cooler i should go?
Thanks for the info!!

I don't know which year Xs650 you have. Before you go to cooler plugs, I would install the crossover and shorty mufflers and see where you are on jetting. For example, my stock XS650D has a stock main jet of 122.5 and to make it run richer, you will have to go to a higher number jet. There is only one main jet per carb, so when you buy the new jets, buy a pair of each of the next few sizes bigger because you may have to experiment until you get the proper jets. A good way to see where yor are on the rich/lean mixture is to read the spark plugs. I always take my bike out on the open road an hold the speed steady at 60 mph for about five miles, then without allowing the bike to idle, shut it off and read the plugs right there at the side of the road. A lean mixture will produce a white plug, and a rich mixture will produce a black plug, you want to be right in the middle with a chocolate brown color on the plugs. If you are just a tad bit lean on a plug read, then you could go to a cooler plug.

I put on K&N's and rejetted from 135 to 145. The plugs are a pretty brown. I am getting geared up to put some shortys on, but there are several issues i should attack before getting back into the fun stuff. Such as, it doesn't run right now. p/s its a 79 special.

let's talk about 1.75" I.D. pipes. Mr. Minton says they're a good upgrade. Do you have to do anything besides buy them/get them bent, and then slide the exhaust flange on? I've got some prelim. ideas for an exhaust, and wondered if i should have some 1 3/4 bent or buy some, or just go with what i've got? anybody want my rusted out, scratched up old megaphones? well, one is pretty good, one is not so hot.

I've done the 1 3/4 inch exhaust. Unless you are running big bore and all out I don't think it's worth it. Too much pipe. If you enjoy blowing alot of fuel and making more noise then go for it. I would stick with 1 5/8. Use an early model headpipe. They were better. 74 and earlier. They didn't step down to a smaller size inside. They had an anti-reversion cone. Bored straight all the way through. They make an excellent racket when run open with a slightly modded engine, i.e. carbs.

MAC 2-2 head pipes (available from 650 Central) are 1.5" OD, and Mike's XS sells pipes in that diameter as well. Both sets are chromed steel over 33" long, and can be trimmed to suit. If you want stainless you'll have to buy the bends and tubing and make them yourself or have them made. 1.75" pipes will present you with major tuning issues, particularly on an otherwise stock engine, but if you just have to have 'em, Michael Morse at 650 Central can provide inserts that'll make them work. They're available from Jemco, Omar's Dirt Track Racing, and Shell Racing Specialties. Jemco will fabricate any diameter you want in nickel plated steel very reasonably.
