So this is my first post here. I just picked up a 1979 xs650 special that I'm looking to turn into a 70's style chopper. A little bit of a rake, hardtail, springer front end etc. Does anyone have any advice on things I can work on during the summer and still be able to ride? I don't want to start something and the bike not be ridable for than 2 days at a time. Obviously the hardtail and paint will have to wait until this winter. Any advice is appreciated. Thanks.

Ehh boy, here's where my head splits in half. The purist half is having convulsive fits at the thought of a sibling (I have the same exact bike) being mutilated. The checkbook half wants to sit back and watch another stocker disappear and bump the value of my bike up yet another small notch. Are you sure you can't do this to some other more common bike? Or if it must be an XS, why not find one that's already molested? This subject usually makes for some interesting reading, might wanna hang on!

Welcome Justin
Don't do anything except service it and ride it for the summer, deal with any problems as you find them, that way if you do decide to modify you know you've got a sound bike to start with and you're not scratching your head thinking was this broken before I started or have I done something wrong.
Secondly, please don't cut up an SE or SF, they're the best looking of the custom variants and prices are on the up, if you must then the later ones with the ugly rear light/mudguard/seat combo are much more common and IMO are ripe for a chop job.

By all means go through that scoot and ride it this summer. Then try to score a ride on somebody's hardtail with a jacked-out front end. If you want a bike for anything but a fashion statement to pose with, that experience will make you forget about the chop job. Tip: if you do want a bike as a fashion statement, Gucci purses are cheaper.

Thanks guys. I'm already having a few problems with it. Sputtering and dying, backfiring, etc. got a lot to figure out. As for riding a hardtail I've ridden ten before and I fell in love. But I think everything is gonna have to wait until this winter anyways. Atleast until I get the little things figured out

I'm not gonna ask how Griz knows the price range of Gucci purses.
On second thought, yes I am.

Haha sorry guys.....just got a chance to get on here...rode the xs up to big mountain run in wv and it all went to nuts haha. Found out the intake boots are cracked and not creating enough vacuum to get fuel. So I ordered a new set. I also learned some stuff while I was up there....anyone know anything about a 270 or 277 rephrase engine? How much work is it? Price? Anything like that?
