Hi, I am hoping someone out there could help me with this. I have had my XS (1980) for about a year now and I haven't had a problem with it at all. It has been a good bike so far. The previous owner took really good care of it and its in immaculate condition. The other day, I wanted to adjust the clutch cable a bit (with the little nut attached to the lever), so I started it up and tested out the bike out on the driveway. It started right up and ran perfectly. I turned it off and adjusted the clutch cable again. Then, I started it up and rode it down the driveway again to test the adjustment. I did this one more time, THEN........ I went to start it up, the neutral light came on, the tail light came on, it was set to "run" and when I pushed the START button, I heard a little "click" and the bike just went dead. There was no juice anywhere. The neutral light wasn't working and the tail light wasn't working either. I checked the fuses and the all the connections. Everything seemed fine from the outside. I waited a couple of days and replaced the fuses just to make sure that they were not causing the problem (even though they looked fine). So, I tried it again and what do you know? - The neutral light came on, the rear light came on, and so I thought I was back in business. I thought that it was just a fuse that "appeared" normal but was damaged. NOPE. When I pushed the START button, the same thing happened. I heard a little "click" and the lights went dead and then I had no juice again. I consulted my Haynes Manual and I cant find anything in there that can help me troubleshoot this problem. Has anyone out there had a similar problem with there XS? Does anyone know what is happening with my XS? Any help with this would be greatly appreciated!

Hello and welcome to the XS650 Forum!
When these electrical gremlins creep up, you have to start at square one and work your way from there.
First step is having the battery professionally tested and proved to be o.k.. If not, then replace.
Second step is to prove all battery and associated connections are clean, corrosion free and tight.
Report back after that.

Check and clean all the connections on the starter solenoid and starter motor. Do the grounds too while you're at it.

I cleaned all the connections and inspected all the wires that go to and from the battery, solenoid, and starter (and checked inside the headlight bucket also). Everything looked good, the wires were just a bit dirty. When I turned the key I had power again, but instead of pushing the start button, I tried the kick starter. She started right up-no problems. So I am guessing its the solenoid. The little "click" I hear after I push the start button is the safety relay shutting off power to the starter-thinking it has already started?

Alright!!! Check this out!!! I took apart the solenoid, everything looked good and I sanded the points for good measure. After removing the main cable/wire that leads from the battery to the solenoid, I noticed that the metal tool box had rubbed through the thick rubber coating/housing and was touching the metal! Now, after buying a new battery, which I needed anyway because the old one was leaking acid everywhere (I bought a new gel filled battery which doesn't leak-highly recommended), and buying a new safety relay from EBAY (now I have a spare...lol!!), all she needed was for me to check that cable and keep it from grounding to her frame!!! Now, back to enjoying my Sunday ride up to the canyon!!! Thanks guys for all your help!!!!!
