I'm looking at a used oil cooler for an XS but I'm not quite sure if I should go for it, the pipes are simply tee'd into the front rocker feed pipe and I would be concerned that unless there's a non-return valve in the cooler inlet, there could be a delay in feed to the top end at startup until the pump has filled the cooler? Does any one agree this could starve the top end at the most critical time and does the rocker feed pipe normally drain down when the engine is standing?
Thanks guys
Max

People have talked about doing that, but most agree that it would starve out the top end. The pressure on the top end at idle is less than five pounds. That is why you see most people going into the side case for oil coolers, there is greater flow and pressure coming right off the pump. if you use a laser temp gun you can see the top end is the hottest part of the engine. My opinion is if anything the top end could use more oil flow to cool it down and I sure wouldn't want to do anything to obstruct what little flow it does have.

Right you are, Richard! Some have recommended enlarging the hole in the feed pipe fitting as a means of increasing oil flow to the head; a very bad idea, as velocity of flow will be reduced.

You've confirmed what I thought guys, oil cooler good, connecting one to the rocker feed pipe not good.
Thanks
