My '79 has the cast aluminum factory rims, with the black inlays. Does anyone know how to get the black back to 'black'? Polishing the exposed aluminum spokes and rim lip goes fine, but if any polish (or even normal road grime) gets on the black sections I can't seem to get the stuff totally gone. I won't be repainting them anytime soon...assuming it's paint. Or is it powdercoat? To add to the problem, the black areas arent smooth either, and tend to hold on to the uglies...otherwise I would wax the snot out of them. Any pointers?

And just an fyi... this stuff does work durn good on aluminum and all kinds of bare metals. Worth the price. McMaster carries it if you know someone who has an account. www.maasinc.com/

You mean I'm the only one with dirty rims?? I am ashamed. Well, sounds like you put more attention into it than I do. I give 'em a cursory pass with the wash brush (if) I am washing my bike. Beyond that for me, I don't feel putting the effort into the rims past a quick pass of the brush would net me anything in return. The bike is mechanically fit, tires are very recent etc... For me, I am keeping it clean enough being a 35 yr old ride. G Man

G, the years of dirty riding seem to have faded the black on the rims to 'not quite black' anymore. I tend to detail the thing in steps...whatever is off the bike for wrenching gets the scrub n polish treatment while it's out. Eventually it starts to look better little by little. The last time the wheels were off I tried a few things on the black that sort-of brought it back, but eventually faded out within a few weeks out in the weather. If the black is BLACK, you just see a clean rim. If it's faded and gray-ish, then it's reeeal noticeable. I'm not shooting for perfection, but if I can get whatever I'm working on a few steps up the pretty scale then I'll take the time on it.

I had the same issue with my old Z1100 Lawson which showed up far worse because the spokes were gold, the only solution was a light dusting of fresh paint, masking the polished rim edges was a ball-ache but don't bother doing the edges of the spokes, just scrape them with a razor when the paint is dry.
