Hey, I put my "77 XS650 away end of last August. IT was running perfectly. I ran the carbs dry and emptied the tank. Starting it up this spring one side was not firing. I pulled the carbs off to clean them and when I did found that one of the fuel lines was crimped. So new lines on but thought I might as well give the carbs a clean. I took them apart, cleaned, used compressed air to blow the jets and dry everything and reassembled. The bike idles perfectly but twisting the throttle does not produce an instant effect. The bike picks up speed slowly but will happily cruise once up to speed. Whats going on? Is air leaking in? Any thoughts on how to diagnose?
Tx in advance David

The slides are lifted by vacuum differential. The diaphragms could be leaking on one or both your slides? Could also just be some crude making your slides sticky which could make them slow. In which case wipe the off, being careful not to scratch them.

One of Nature's mysteries is the human tendency to fool with the carbies as soon as an engine misbehaves. David, the First Rule of Troubleshooting is this: Ignition first. Always.
If you have breaker point ignition, realize that a long sit invites corrosion. Check your points for pits, if pitted file or replace, if not clean with 400 grit or finer paper and solvent--rubbing alcohol will do. Adjust cam chain tension, then gap and time.

What did you clean the carbs WITH? Did you pull the top end of the carb apart? Did you clean the outsides of the carbs first? you could have transferred some gunk into the carbs. I would boil them out, I have used Original Pine Sol with great results (do NOT use the Lemon or Citrus) Warm it to a simmer then leave it set for a full DAY When you blow it out, make sure to open the throttle otherwise it is on the idle circuit and you don't get the Run Circuit blown out. that is probably what is going on, a chunk of grit got blown into the run passage way and couldn't get out because the throttle lift lever was spring loaded closed on you. The Bile is probably running fine at idle but one side is running very lean and you are basically running on one carb. You can also check the rubber boot for cracks and air getting in, since these do not use an accelerator pump but the engines vacuum to pull gasoline into the intake valve to accelerate. Let us know what you find.. Orion61 (AKA Larry B) Iowa USA
