Hi, I am new to forum, looking for some expert advice! I have a 1980 xs650, off the road for 17 years and now unable to start, , carbs cleaned out, new coils, condensers and points, firing before TDC F marks are lined up, unable to get it idling so cannot use strobe, any ideas on how to progress or likely problem please?
Thanks

Yep, there's a loaded one. Gonna need more info, I think. 1980? Shouldn't have points....right gang? Probably the best thing to do to get you rolling is buy a service manual, or look it up online. The Elder Gurus know the site, I can't remember it offhand. But it's the Bible when it comes to wrenching on these bikes. And welcome to the club. There's free pizza up on the bar, but I think it's been sitting there a week or so.

A 1980 should have a magnet on the alternator rotor which triggers the ignition timing. Some times those magnets weeken over time. The magent should be strong enough to pull in the tip of a screwdriver. That is probably not you problem but it wouldn’t hurt to check that

hi all. to be a bit more specific, both set of points start to open after the 'f' mark and that includes the tolerance range but just before TDC. i cannot move the backplate any more clockwise to compensate. point gaps are correct. how else can i align my timing manually.

Assuming points are correctly gapped, there are two reasons you could run out of advance adjustment. One is cam chain stretch; the tension adjuster pulls the cam CW as the cam chain wears, and the ignition must be advanced to compensate. A second possibility is a worn timing unit. If the timing unit is the source of your trouble, you can inspect it with static timing. Advance the ignition manually. If the difference between advanced and retarded positions is much greater than the specified 25*, the timing unit should be replaced if possible.
