I have a 1978 xs650, I purchased a set of VM36 from 650motorcycle put them on thinking little tuning would have to be done, because i was told they would go on and would just have to set idle speed and sync them. Well my bike is running pretty lean with them on there it wont stay idling, lack of power under 1/2 throttle, and will just die out if i try to go past 1/2 throttle. It runs better with the start levers engaged. I put new spark plugs in, I Have a 2 into 1 exhaust with a free flowing muffler, motor is bored out, uni air filters. If any one can help i would greatly appreciate it. When i put it away over the winter it was running with the original carbs on it that where jetted out, and i didn't mess with the timing or anything on the engine over the winter.

Well I'm certainly no expert on carburetors, but what you are describing sounds like fuel starvation. If running the choke improves the idle even after it's warmed up I would suspect fuel starvation. Causes could be restricted or under sized fuel lines or low level in the float bowls because they weren't adjusted right. Might also be some crud broke loose from lines and passed in to the carbs where it would end up blocking the float needles. Others would have better knowledge than me.

i replaced the fuel lines put new inline filters in i did manage to get it running better by adjusting the jet needle height, i havent had a test drive on it yet so i dont know how its going to run under load but as of now its running good. thanks for your input. any other tips or tricks would be helpful on the vm36 round slides.
