Hello from Iowa!
I'm hoping this is where I can post an Intro?
I live here in Northeast Iowa in a small town of 'bout 500 folks or so. I'm a 44 yr old machinist by trade and have always been fascinated with anything with two wheels and a motor. My 1st bike was a 1975 Yamaha 650 pieces together from several different bikes. The bike was given to me by a good friend out in the Nebraska Sand Hills when I was about 14. We used to get that old girl running and tear around those sandhills with nothing but old soxs wired over the carbs. We;d clean em' out and start all over again. We put that poor bike through hell and back. So that's why I am and always will be an avid fan of the Yamaha 650 twin. Its a bike that will do anything you ask of it and do it well. On or off the road.
When I joined the Army in 1987, the old bike was given to a friend of the family. 3 years ago, my uncle Mike called and asked if I wanted his 1980 Yamaha SX650 Special II which needed(s) a new CDI box. It didn't take me long to get to his shed and strap that black machine on the trailer. It is truly a sweet all original bike. Three years ago, I tucked it into the barn and tonight, I wheeled it out, scrubbed it up and got a fresh coat of polish on the paint. My wife as well as both my parents have bike licenses and its time to get this bike on the road. The last time it was on the road was 1994. So new tires are a must, although the current rubber shows no checking or wear. I'm here to learn more about this amazing bike, and how to convert it to points ignition. I enjoy doing all my own work on my bikes, with the exception of flywheel work, as I don't have the equipment.
The bikes I currently own are:
Harley 1949 FL Panhead
Honda 1972 CB750K Rat Cafe( lots or sentimental value)
Harley 1977 XL Sportster
Yamaha 1980 XS 650 Special II
Harley 1981 FLH80 Classic
Honda 1981 CB750 Custom
A Happy Turkey Day to you all!
