Parked the bike last week, waited for the rain to dry, then went to start it....nothing but a click from down below. Neutral light glows strong green, touch the starter button and everything goes dark. Wait a minute or so and the light comes back on, only to get the same click and repeat. Won't even kick start. I had to monkey in a substitute ignition switch a while back when the original sprayed itself all over the lawn. I tested the switch and it was a bit scratchy so I gave it a contact cleaner bath and works fine. Battery is up, but I'm getting strange readings from the solenoid terminal, like 2 or 3 volts. This is at the opposite end of the positive cable (??) All connections visible are clean and no corrosion anywhere to be seen. Even jumped the starter cable direct to the positive battery cable, and nothing. What gives??

Ooookkkk...replaced the starter solenoid and keyed ignition switch today. Still zilch. Might just be time to park it for the year and mess with it in the spring.

Sounds like the cable bro... You're taking a measurement at the input to the solenoid and there is a major voltage drop... cable. Input to solenoid good output on solenoid bad... solenoid bad. Good luck ... Don't give up yet.

I've had cars act like this when the battery terminals were corroded or loose. Everything looks ok, but as soon as you touch the starter...bzzt, nothing. But all connections are spotless, and the cable is pretty much as new. Something inside is draining the battery to nothing after sitting for less than a day. Probably a short somewhere, and I'm fighting with 2 cars also at the same time. You guessed it...ELECTRICAL. It's getting cold and I need my winter beater tip-top soon, so the insurance came off the bike and into storage it goes til spring. Oh well, at least it finally looks good.

Forgot to end this story, sorry. Turns out the battery developed an internal short. Showed fully charged voltage with a meter, but once a load was put on it...instant chaos.
