Hello, I have a mostly stock 77 XS650-D. I purchased the Part #14-0901 ignition set from MikeXS and have most of it installed. I’m having a problem mounting the coil. Lack of space. I saw on the Pamco website to mount it where the old coils came out but can’t fit it in because of the silver can and black electrical device mounted in this space. I’m looking for suggestions. Maybe relocate these 2 pieces to make room but not sure where to put them. Hope you can help.Thank you for any help in advance, Slimbob

Different coil. Not same mounting dimensions. What did he do with the turn signal relay and the silver can? Can't see them in his picture.

Don't misunderstand, this is a great forum, but if you are looking for quick info on a specific problem you might want to slide over to www.xs650.com/forum/forumdisplay.php?f=2 for a more immediate response to your question.

What oil should you use with that coil?

"Extraordinarily quiet," G? I dunno, I usually clam right up on questions like this. But hey, here's the answer: fabricate some brackets, buy some zip ties, and put that stuff wherever.

Well, I don't usually agree with grizld1.. .....in fact , I never agree with him, but in this case he has it right. The new coil is an imposition to the stock arrangement of things, but their position does not affect their function. There is some space where the frame members come together in the front. Kinda a little cubby hole where you can stuff the turn signal flasher. The black box with all of the wires is probably the turn signal canceler and it is next to useless, so just unplug it and throw it in the trash. You won't notice its absence. You will encounter this dilemma often if you are going to work on an XS650, or any vintage bike for that matter.

I was referring to the recent referrals to other forums... LOL However it is actually no big deal, my comment was just the first thing that came to mind as I had heard a tv character use the cricket cricket thing recently... G Man

You may not want to know what a well known tuner once told me . "Just duct tape them to the backbone . It's what i do and I never had any problems . "

Problem solved this past Weekend. I used a piece of predrilled angle iron and mounted it to one side with the original bracket holes. A little tight for the gas tank tunnel, but it fit.
Thanks for all your suggestions.

If you have an interference fit between your gas tank and ignition coils... then something might be rubbing... IF something is rubbing... SOMETHING will win... SOMETHING will lose... One of your Something's has gas in it... Your other something is generating 30,000 volt's... least for all this work I hope it is... Point is if they meet... you might have an issue

This pic may be as useless as it is tardy to this thread, but what the heck. Self-cancel module went byebye and the welded-on mounting tang was 're-oriented' up and out of the way. The wiring still needs cleaned up, but this setup went the entire last season without a hitch, which surprised me since the aluminum brackets were meant to be temporary until I could do it a bit less yoogly. The other side is pretty much a mirror image, but with the grounds connected to the lower mount. It's worked perfect so far, so it stays. Not sure if this is the coil you have, but either way I hope your fix does right by you. Btw...the 2-pronger signal flasher unit is out of my vault of vintage Ford debris and works beautifully, even with front led's. It's the rear led's that are giving me chitfits. Subject for a future post elsewhere Attachments:
