I'm not having much luck tuning the Mikuni 38mm cv carbs on my 1973 TX750, having idling issues and sync issues. My 38's have dual throttle cables and the choke mechanism is all on the left carb. I would like to install a pair of later 38's from a XS650 which have a single throttle cable and dual choke mechanisms. The jetting is exactly the same for a 750 as it is for a 650. So the question is what is the center to center distance on the 650 pair, I believe it is 120mm. The 750's center to center distance is 128mm. I'm hoping I can modify the butterfly shafts and the choke shafts for the wider c to c. And what would be the best year 38's to start with. I understand there was a change in jet needle length at some point. I would like to be able to use the needles I have as I had to modify them for the engine to run better. And if you have a spare set kicking around contact me. Photo of my TX750 1973 TX750 YAMAHA by albaljeu, on Flickr

Welcome aboard, appiebroomer. That's one pretty ride you've put together there! The carbs you're interested in are 1976-79. All of these had the round-floor venturi, using the short pattern NJ. Refer to the application list at www.mikesxs.net . Good luck with the conversion!
