there is a 79 yamaha xs 650 for sale near me, it needs a carb rebuild, and has a transmission leak, If i could get it delivered for about 600, would that be a decent price, I've never actually worked on these old things but enjoy a challenge

Well I'll tell you it depends heavily on your location/region. (which you should amend in your profile please ) I just drove 600km's (400 miles) return today and paid $1300.00 for a 1979. Never even heard it run... Took it in soundish, average condition and complete, but as is where is. He originally wanted $2300.00 firm. I offered $1600.00 over the phone sight un-seen. After arriving at the sellers this morning and finally seeing it in person, I realized the bike wasn't exactly as described to me. I was leaving but the seller hung on to me and offered to come down to $1300.00. I gave in and loaded 'er up. I'm in Northern Ontario Canada. G Man

senorpantalones, chances are you won't put that bike on the road for under a grand unless you're doing your own work. Re. the "transmission leak," the oil seal on the tranny output shaft will seep unless the sprocket nut is correctly torqued down, and retightening usually cures the problem. How that nut loosens up in spite of the locking tab that's on it is a mystery, but it happens. I strongly recommend that you take a compression tester with you when you examine the bike. Re. carb work, refer to the Carb Guide at www.xs650temp.proboards.com ; you'll need to enroll and sign in to access it. You didn't mention whether the 79 you're looking at is a Special (bucket seat, buckhorn bars, 16" rear wheel) or a Standard (18" rear wheel, civilized bars, flat seat). 79 was the last year for the Standards, and they're pretty rare. G, you must have wanted that Special pretty bad!
