Been wanting to rebuild a bike for a while to ride something unique. Everyone wants the newest when there is nothing wrong with older bikes. I feel like it keeps the person closer to the vehicle. It was running but has been sitting for a year or so. Lights come on and neutral lights come on, but the on off (excuse my lame terminology) on the right handle bar was snapped and the switch was bypassed. power isn't reaching those wires, and I don't know where to go from here. I was able to run the fuel line and put on the starter solenoid. Any suggestions on where to go from here. I will be showing progress as I get this puppy back goin and on the road. Attachments:

There are a bunch of things to do before you light the fire bro. You say it's been sitting for a year or so... what about the PO (previous Owner) routine maintenance as scheduled? Have you flushed the crankcase? Flushed the fuel tank and check the carbies? Plugs? Timing? Cam chain adjustment? Adjust valves? Are you going to just start it... or do you plan on sitting on her? Suspension components, disassemble and grease/lube? Front end... neck bearings, wheel bearings, fork seals? Swing-arm shaft remove, clean, inspect, lube? Chain?... bunch of stuff bro... bunch of stuff.

Welcome, cjuarez. In future posts you may want to identify your motorcycle if you want help; there were many models of the XS650 with significant differences, especially in the areas of carburetion and electrics. Yours looks like a 78 or 79 Special, but it could be later. A bit of advice to you: buy an aftermarket manual with a wiring diagram, a copy of Ken Maxwell's excellent CD, "XS650 Wiring Explained," and a decent multitester, and download (free) a copy of the factory service manual very kindly provided by Jean Akers at www.biker.net . A final piece of advice: be willing to do your own homework. Ask for help if you get stuck, but try to figure out the problem first. As Rod says, you can approach making your bike roadworthy by going through it system-by-system, doing all the service and repair work that's been neglected over the years; or you can try to "just get it running" and smack at symptoms when trouble arises. The first approach can yield a reliable ride; the second approach usually yields recurring frustration.

To answer as much as I can, it is a 1980 xs650 and the previous owner had it out of the elements, stored it with car and was cleaning all components and just getting it ready to chop into a bobber. The man I bought it from was the chopper, the owner found other projects and didn't want to sink money into it even though this basket case came with a lot of new parts from mikes xs. I do paint and body and plain routine preventative maitnance. Still young and learnin so any little bit of direction would help. Now from my understanding, the shop that had it could turn it over but disassembled the fuel system to clean the carb and the engine did not have any problems. I have wiring diagrams and have for the most part got it to the point of lights on electrical wise someone tried to bypass the electric start and when I test the wire, its not hot. I have already changed all fluids and pligs are new. Anything else that may help?
