Gday folks.. Just wanted to post a pic of Mikes Xs Standard tank with gold trim on my 79 Special.. Recently i dropped my bike and the tank had a massive ding on it.. After looking at all my options i discovered that buying a brand new tank from Mikes XS was the less expensive alternative.. It came within seven days and yesterday i put the new tank on.. I am currently looking at fixing the old one but at least i have time to consider who will do the best job.. Most panel beaters told me that i am looking at $500 to $600 to get the tank fixed.. This tank cost me $340 to get here to Australia and its brand new.. Go figure.. Anyway i think it looks great on my Special.. Especially since i already had a black bike, side covers etc. It is also slightly larger.. 15 litres to i think 13 or 14 litres for the special tank.. I am going to list a couple of the fitting problems, even though only slight problems, i had putting this new standard tank on my 79 Special for anyone that might be considering buying this tank.
1st. Mikes tank does not come with any of the tank rubbers.. Ie. Inner rubbers that fit into slots under the tank and also rubber that bolts the tank down next to the seat. The bolt rubber is kind of a pyramid shaped rubber and rubbers that fit into the circular slots are round.
2nd. When attaching my petcocks from previous Special tank, the petcocks had to be slightly manipulated to get into the new standard tank because the petcock holes were significantly smaller on Mikes tank. Unsure as too why they were smaller. My old Special tanks holes for the petcocks were almost 3 times the size of Mikes. Just be carefull not to ruin your petcocks whilst doing this. I squeezed them slightly with some flat pliars and they only just fit.
Otherwise the tanks seems great. However i am waiting to see what its like after a few months or so.. I have heard mixed reviews about this tank but i will keep you all informed. Mike also sent me some Gold Yamaha stickers that can be applied on the side of the tank for free.. Was not expecting that. I kinda like it without the stickers since there is so much Yamaha branding already on the specials, good to have anyway.
