Howdy. I"m Paul. Been riding since 1965, tho not much for one reason or another since about 1990. Had a lot of bikes (all Japanese) over the years, but the one I most regret selling was the 1974 TX650A that I bought new. After a couple of years of looking, I found a 1979 XS650F that I brought home today. It was licensed and on the road this year. I'm from Downeast Maine (hence the handle) and Maine has an inspection requirement that will keep me from riding it until a couple of items are taken care of. Primarily, it needs tires and mufflers. It also has a spectacularly ugly Vetter Quicksilver fairing on it that will come off as soon as I can find an original headlight can and light. Looking forward to talking with you folks and finding sources for parts for these old classics.

Welcome Paul,
Nice clean Special! Beauty is in the eye of the beholder they say but I'm with you re. the fairing. On my Special changing out the bars to a euro style from 650 Central seemed to make a big difference too. Get to know Mike Morse at 650 Central. Good guy, good stuff

Thanks, Roy
Just got in from checking the charging system after topping up the battery. 13.95v @ 2000 rpm, so it IS working, tho maybe a little low. Starter motor probably needs bearings and brushes as it still doesn't like to start even with a hot battery. Starts first kick on the kick starter tho.
Smells like it's running pretty rich so I pulled the air cleaners. EEEEWWWWWWW! Bare wire cages with some Scotchbrite pop-riveted over it. NOT good. On the hunt for OEM elements now.
Also, I agree on the bars, will be looking for some much straighter bars. Don't care at all for either the look or the comfort of the backswept Special bars.
