I have a 1980 XS650 special It was running although rattling and smoking (top end rebuild I have been told). Had it out to a fellow to look at doing the top end, he was taking forever to get me a price, finally got pissed off and brought it home. After sitting for a year, I charged the battery and away she started. So the other day I recharged the battery just to be safe, threw in the key to show someone what it was doing, got power to the switch as the neutral light is on, but nothing happens when I push the start button. No click no, nothing. Checked the fuses, all good, threw up the kick stand again to try again. Same thing, power at switch, nuetral light on, but nothing when you push the start button, no click no nithing.
Any ideas?

Pull the side cover off and try checking the connections to the starter solenoid and test for power. Wiggle everything to see if a wire is loose. Might also be a loose connection in the headlight bucket spaghetti-mess as well.

I have a similar problem difference is i have a separate starter button installed under seat, (stock one fell out) it was missing and cutting in and out on last ride had to trailer home. so i checked stator brushes and replaced them, starter will roll if i jump across relay but have no spark, battery is new, so do i need a new relay or did my coil calf just got an order from 650 direct had to pay shipping hope i don't need to throw unneeded parts at it. any ideas
update; checked coil resistance nothing plug cap to plug cap but 2.8 on primary so i guess i need a coil just need to verify before i order.
ordered a coil plug ends and wires hope it's not the TCI unit.
