I am looking into buying a 650 from a guy in the next city over. It is already chopped and bobbed but it is still a "project" bike. It has a chopper frame that looks like it had the neck modified. It starts and runs but the engine has never been gone through. I already saw a few things i would change should I buy it including converting the rear brakes to a disc system, springer front end, rebuild and 750 the engine, paint, powder coat etc. I would also like to add a jockey shifter and suicide clutch. Is this stuff even possible and what are some of the better resources for information on doing these things? I need a good book on the engine rebuild, and a lesson on rake and trail to figure out what length i would need the springer front end to make it safe while still looking great. Any help will be appreciated and passed along as soon as i gain some of my own knowledge to share.

Big Sigh... I have a customized XS... yes... guilty as charged. Owned it since it was a year old. Nobody here really cuts em up like that bro. You can google rake and trail... trust me you're prolly well outta the "safe zone" as it is. The thing with buying a motorcycle with a modified frame is that you will be propelling yourself, or your son's keester down the freeway... driving with one hand while shifting... Bottom line is you need to be able to perform a self-inspection of the welds and supporting structure to determine it as road-worthy.

coming into this late but I fell into the bobber/chopper game thinking cool is good. When I was done cutting -welding and wireing it looked great sitting still, road like nuts. I road it 100 miles and sold it as fast as I could just hoping to recover my cost. Learned my lesson never again will I chop a frame again. Trusting some ones backyard welding would also bother me too. Be carefull buying someone elses unfinished junk.

The answer is "Get the frame modified by professionals then complete the rest yourself (if capable)" If not seek help from people who know how....

The question is, "Do you want a motorcycle or a fashion accessory to pose in front of bars with?"
