I traded a Suzuki for this Monday, and swapped the bars and seat already. Other than a front tire, full maintenance and some detailing, just leaving it as it is. before: after:

Nice! Where did you get that seat?

It is a Saddlemen seat cover. www.saddlemen.com/My project '75 XS650 came with a '78-'79 Special seat with this cover on it. I removed the cover to use that pan for a scrambler style seat I'm making for the '75. So, I cut the backrest area from the "king and queen" seat, sandblasted and painted the pan, and installed the cover. Here's the '75 when I bought it, with the "Special" seat. I'm glad I carefully removed the cover and foam, since just by chance I ended up needing it.

I have a 80 special that I cut down the seat pan for a XS2 seat cove it's ok but, it didn't turn out as nice as yours did. I want to make my special like a standard style. I havw a set of 36 spoke wheel for is and an just collecting part at this point. Your sure looks nice.

I'm really happy with how the seat looks. I think the specials are great looking bikes, but the standards are one of the best looking bikes ever made, so a tough act to follow. Here is another pic of the seat.

I put some miles on it... ...and decided to go ahead and fix a few things on it like steering bearings, swingarm bushings, chain and sprockets, and rebuilding the forks. I'm also painting some of the rusty parts. I hope to have it back together in a couple weeks.

Looking real nice bro ... I drilled a couple of holes in each rail of my lift like that and used two "U" clamps to hold the frame steady... my frame isn't in a painted state yet so it doesn't affect the paint... yet.

I like the U clamp idea. I use tie down straps sometimes, but they usually end up getting in the way.

NICE!
I just picked up a '79 myself, and hope to get it looking as good as yours.
What bars did you use? After losing the sissy bar, the fugly Vetter fairing and the hiway pegs, the OEM Special bars are the next thing to go.

At first I put on an old set of bars that I believe came from a '75 Suzuki GT250. In the last picture are a Bikemaster "European" handlebars that are just perfect. I also got new shorter clutch and throttle cables for a standard model to make cable routing better.
