Hey everyone, My name is Cole Mietzner. I live in Denver, Colorado and I'm a software engineer. I am 22 years old and cars have been a passion of my since I first got behind a wheel of one. I rode dirtbikes as a kid but nothing bigger than a 125.
I had been looking for an old vintage bike for about 3 years. I wanted a vintage bike for a few reason. I love old stuff, I love being able to bring something back from being basically trash to something that looks and drives amazing! And honestly finding and old yamaha or honda is goign to be a lot cheaper than going out and buying a new r6 for 8 grand.
Anyways, I found a 1969 yamaha yds6 for 100. Engine was seized and it was in pretty bad shape, but the frame was straight. I got it home and started taking it apart. 10 minutes into it, I realized the engine was shot. I figure, its a two stroke. Ill open it up and soak it in oil and it will loosen right up... Which probably would have worked but i'm pretty sure it sat at the bottom of a lake for 20 years. So my search for a new engine started.
A few days later I found a guy on craigslist who was selling a motorcycle trailer, with a free yamaha engine sitting on top of it. He was storing it for a friend and him and his friend quit talking and it had been sitting for awhile and his friend wouldnt come pick it up. He was asking 65 for the trailer and the engine. I called him up and he knew nothing about motorcycles. The only reason he knew it was a yamaha was because of the side cover. He didnt know if it turned over, if it was complete, the size... nothing. I offered hime $20 for just the engine since i dont need a trailer.
I figured $20 isnt much to loose. Worse case I part out the good parts of the engine. So I drove about 45 min, walked up to the engine. Saw it was a 4 stroke, pushed the kickstart and there was good compression and... well it moved! Which was a good sign.
It was missing the side cover, Carbs and a few other parts that I dont know what they are.
Sorry for the long write up but, hey... I think i fully introduced myself! haha. Here are some pictures... If anyone could tell me what the parts is thats missing under where the carbs would be that would be awesome.
The Day I picked her up.
The original 250 2 stroke
The new 650
Here is the view of the part that is missing. I dont know if its just an inspection cover or what. Its the open hole under the carb openings.
Cam bearings look pretty clean.
I'm going to feel like a complete idiot if this isnt an xs650 engine. But according to a wikipage and this 3g0 serial its a 1980.
Thanks for looking everyone!
