I bought a 81 xs650 with 1,340 miles on Ebay for $3250 plus shipping to Texas from Wisconsin . It's all stock and original and from looking at the pics it's in showroom condition and museum quality with no rust at all . the owner said it's perfect and I won't find one in better condition. But he said it will need a new battery soon because it's over 5 years old . I will replace the 30 year old tires too.... Any thoughts or tips ?

Gday.. Are you going to keep it stock or are you thinking of a flat tracker or cafe conversion? I kept my Xs650 stock for four years before i converted to a cafe. Plus i did not make any changes to the frame just in case i want to change it back to stock one day. Either way these Xs' are magnificent for that very reason. You can pretty much turn them into anything you want.

Hi fz, take some time to surf the forum and when you get to wrenching there's a post or three on just about anything you'd need to do. Just be careful if you plan to discuss hard tails/bobbers etc...those subjects tend to start a lot of food fights in here. Dan

From "museum quality $3000+" to "stock except for suspension, chassis and shocks etc" sounds a little off center of stock to me... chassis... would make me think of frame... frame mods does not equate to stock... done, zip, I've said enough... Did I just get hit with yesterday's Jello?

Depends, Rod...if it stuck for a second, chances are it's a day old, two at most. If it bounced off and ricocheted under the counter without collecting dust, it's at least a week old. Do not inquire as to how this knowledge came to be.

What I was trying to say is that I will leave it mostly stock . I just want to make it handle better and stop better. I'm going to start with some good tires , swingarm bearings, rear shocks and fork springs.

Steering head bearings , front wheel bearings , brakes , tire , fork service ... Just get after the front all in single thrash . You'll be happy you did . The swing arm bearings/bushings are not a bad idea either . You would be surprised the things that a complete tune-up will uncover .
