Today I was riding on a narrow two lane mountain road. The weather was nice and the road had no cars on it as I winded up into the mountains. After a while I noticed clouds in the distant peaks figured from past experience it could turn to rain quickly. I looked as my trip meter which said 30 miles and decided I would probably need fuel too before long, so I decided to turn back. The bike was running like a top and the twisties were getting good to me so I was having fun on my way back pushing it a little in and out of the turns. I was about half way back but still in the hills when I rounded a blind corner at about 40mph, suddenly coming at me the other way and taking up all of the narrow two lanes available was a big combine on a truck. He veered to the left and I went right through the two foot of pavement left to me. I went right around him like it was nothing. I never would have expected a combine on a mountain road. As I continued on my way I wondered what the heck he was doing up there. You never know what bizarre stuff you will encounter on the road this time of year.

You'd think there would be a spotter or signal car a ways in front of it for just that kind of situation. Isn't that the way it goes though? Just when you finally think you can relax and put a bit more attention into enjoying the ride and scenery, something pops out of nowhere to remind you 'when you least expect it, expect it'. Sounds like a great ride otherwise!

"Veered to the left," did he? That's where the SOB should have been to start with. If he didn't know how to paint the right edge of the pavement with his rear tandems, he shouldn't have been driving that rig. And it would have been nice of him to sound his air horn to warn oncoming vehicles that he needed most of their lane, wouldn't it? One of my pet peeves is that any idiot can haul big ag. equipment, travel trailers, big boats, and so on without being subject to the requirements (CDL Class A or B, DAT's, physical exam, log book, etc.) and penalties that apply to commercial drivers.

Well other than that it was a great ride. These days if I can get half a day to ride it's hard to bum me out after that, especially with the bike running as well as it did. The more I ride it the better it seems to run. When I got home I refilled the bike and it took a whole gallon of gas :-)

I was riding my '82 650 through town just down the hill from my house and was passing by Brookshires and notices the cars in front of me swerving to the other side of the road. The culprit was a shopping cart that someone had let run out in the road. Not that much of an obsticle for a car or truck but a little more problematic for a bike. I ended up pulling over in the parking lot and getting the cart back up in the parking lot. A good reminder to not get too relaxed when ridding
