I bought this bike in a box the other day. I couldn’t help it. The last build was so much fun I wanted to build another. I wanted something I wouldn’t feel bad about modifying so I decided on a special. I just figured it would have to be totally gone through but I kicked it over and got 125 pounds of compression even the other day so, I don’t know the engine may be salvageable the way it is. This is going to be a street tracker. I have a spare set of 18 and 19 inch 36 spoke wheels for it but I’m still trying to decide whether it needs R6 or GRSR front suspension, of course there will have to be some weight calculations and figuring to get the thing sprung right if I did that but, I have a project now to keep me busy for a while. I just got the title sorted out today. Here are the parts that came with it. that's a additional disk brake swing arm at the bottom. I don't like that seat at all. the speedo says 25k but I'm not even sure it that is the one that came on the bike. It should be fun to build. I kind of like I have another earlier tank but I kind of like the one that came on it. :-) Well here is the mockup of the engine and parts I made so far This is just a test fit of the parts to see how it looks and fits. I just fitter the haed assembly together without the pistons and the rods are held up by foam. The lower is wrong so I am remaking with the correct 9 degree hole offset for the 447.

Well, congrats, another project indeed. Looks to be a combination of parts from several years. The smaller Special tank is more fitting on a Tracker. Carbs look to be late model BS38s. Oil site glass engine cover is '82 or newer I think. Nice update, I put one on my '78.

Yeah the guy said it was a 80 and the paperwork said it was and 80 but I think it's a 82 The DMV said their computer system would not accept the numbers as an 82 so they would correct in the the fixed the system. The parts are from several bikes close to the same year. I'm still trying to decide how many changes I'm going to make to it. I have quite a collection of older parts but. I'm not sure if they will do me any goos on this one. I think there is going to be tig welding involved.

Maybe that seat was drawn up when the Porsche whale-tail was all the rage? Or perhaps that's what was riding on it, who knows Yet another noob question...it seems that people are more willing to cut up a Special as opposed to a standard model. Any reason for this? Looks like a solid project candidate, keep us posted!

Whale tale LOL!..... Well there you have it. and I though it was just an ugly seat :-) The reason people prefer moding Specials is because they made so darn many of them where as the standards were much smaller production runs.
The Specials leave a great deal to be desired in handling performance and engine parts are plentiful so they are a good candidate for mods. I have a 71 xs650 that was really difficult to find parts for and when I did find them they were expensive. I still consider the 71 a work in progress I have seen XS1 and XS1Bs in bike museums as an early UJM which was the beginning of the Japanese motorcycle invasion. It was there answer to the Triumphs, BSAs and Nortons which dominated the market at the time.
My Dad had a 66 Triumph TR6 which was a beast of a machine, It shook like a thrashing machine. it was loud and fast. I have always been nostalgic about the early standards because of their no frills functionality.
With the special I can do whatever I want to it and there will always be plenty more in the world, so nobody is going to miss it.

Het Nice find Richard... Geez, can't wait till I'm looking for my next one. Nice find. My sister had a TR4 IRS with a wooden (teak?) steering wheel and wire spooled wheels with knock offs. Car was a blast, i got it started everytime I went home... then there's the story about the NJ State Troopers and... well... sis was pissed but I got the car outta there. I don't need no stinkin papers...
