Hi all and thanks in advance: I have a Special with a 16" rear wheel and can't see nay reason why I can not simply buy an 18" wheel to make it sit up a bit flatter. Ideas? Dan

You can; it's a bolt-on fit. A 110/90/18 tire, however, won't sit any taller than the 130/90/16 that's OEM on the Specials; the narrower tire will quicken steering a little, but it will still be sluggish. To get significant results you need to raise the rear with taller shocks and drop the front a bit. Shocks on Specials mount at more of an angle than on Standards, so I'd recommend eye-to-eye height of at least 13-1/2" and dropping the fork clamps 1/2". Be sure that rims are well trued, OEM plastic swingarm bushings have been replaced with either bronze bushings or needle bearings, and that OEM loose ball steering head bearings have been replaced with tapered roller bearings, since modifications made to improve handling will also aggravate the effects of any defects in the suspension. For bearings, bushings, shocks and springs, give Michael "Mercury" Morse a call at 650 Central.

Yes, it is a bolt-in swap if your current 16" is a drum, a bit more complicated if it's a disc. The 18" rears only came with a drum.

Thanks to you both- since I have a disc it looks like I will go the taller shock route.

What I meant by complicated is you just need a few more parts. You need to change the brake pedal pivot shaft because the bracket on the back is totally different between disc and drum versions. Also, there is a drum version of the swingarm. You can mod your disc version and make it work but the easiest solution is just to swap them.

There's no such thing as an XS650 18" rear mag, only spoked, if you want a mag in that size then you need to adapt one from an XS250/400, RD250/400 or coffin tank XS500.
Be prepared to change bearings & shafts, make spacers, alter sprocket offset etc.

Spoke and drum is fine . But want it drop in . I don't want to take him from one year and boys spikes and lace a wheel. Just want to buy a complete 18 rear wheel . I know it won't really raise thr bike I'm putting longer shocks on . But the 16 wheel is ugly to me and I want as close to even wheel sizes front and back .

as asked elsewhere .... The rear caliper is bone stock 2F0 . I was careful to leave as much of the conversion stock as possible . With the un-modified KZ750B LTD M1 twin 18" disc brake hub and rim the Honda disc centers in the caliper once .200" is taken off the diameter . Now one caution , the disc was "marked" CB200C but I did not take it off myself so I won't swear to it . I'm told that the KZ305 is very similar also so ya pays yer money and takes yer chances . I did turn down one side of the rear hub and I believe it was the sprocket side . I'll know more in a week or so . As the project stands the disc is centered in the caliper and the sprockets are so nearly in alignment that I may be able to let it go . I did have to futz with spacers for hours but it fits . I should say almost fits . I'll have to pull the wheel toward the drive side about .250" to put it on center line but with all else falling into place I'm far beyond complaining. I had considered the modification of the front hub to carry sprocket and disc but going without the dampener was more than I or the gearbox and transmission could tolerate . ~kop

and ... Ill admit its more than most would be willing to go to but I've been lacing for decades and have someone that can cut and roll threads to my needs . Usually I just have them lace because as long as I've been doing this I'm actually no d**n good at it . As a wheel builder I'm actually a better welder ... The rim is a somewhat rare NON CM Harley 18" x 40 hole . Tire is a somewhat difficult Dunlop K-180 18" . ~kop Attachments:
