Well the left front valve adjustment cover is 4 blot so it's after 71. if you could get the numbers off the lower front of the engine case it would help figuring out what year it is. Somewhere between 72 and 76 would be my guess. The timing chian tensioner cap looks 75 or earlier.

It could be a 79 or 80 but most likely and 80. that's funny because the head looks older but my first guess would be an 80. Here is the link for the vin and model lookup www.biker.net/650parts_index.html Just scroll down.

That motor, since you asked for opinions, needs some serious TLC... Your bike is what is commonly referred to as a "basket case". Determining what is missing for a newb, will present you with a bit of a challenge. The challenge will also be due to the fact that you need to decide what you're gonna run... then you'll know if you have it or not. Your missing alot of stuff bro. To say what is missing is like finding Waldo ... I see your missing RH sidecover laying on the ground over there... Where's the LH? You got rust ... is there rust inside the crankcase... no plugs, exhaust or carbies installed, hmmm is there rust in the cylinders? The list goes on and on bro ... please don't find this offensive... you asked.

I might shop around and find a complete running engine. The one you have can be for parts or as time and money allow be rebuilt. Where are you at?
