hi im the proud new owner of a 1981 XS650, and i have some question that maybe someone can answer: (1) my blinkers stopped working, they turn on but dont flash?? (2) my battery wont stay charged, i just got the bike on sat., after about a 75mile ride my bike died at a stop light, i kick started it(elec. start would not work) but 1/2 mile down the road it just died again, i had to push it 2 miles home...i need to fix this asap...can anyone help

Can any of you fellers tell me why the brushes have to be ungrounded for a bobber/chopper?

Can any of you fellers tell me why the brushes have to be ungrounded for a bobber/chopper? Butchering the chassis and/or suspension has nothing to do with the charging system. The difference in rotor wiring had to do with the way the voltage regulator read alternator output. Early mechanical regulators required one brush to be grounded, later solid state regulator-rectifier units required both brushes to be hot. There are aftermarket solid state reg-rec units available for the older alternators, so before you wire up, be sure of what you have.
