It it crazy to chop a 1970 frame for my project or should I put it aside and use a newer one (80's) or build my own.Just wondering about the value of the bikes originality being a 1970.

Well any early 70s bike is 40 years old so it is getting collectable. That means two things 1. It will be worth less if you cut the frame and 2. Parts will be harder to get than a later 80s bike. It kind of depends on how complete your bike is now. If it’s all there un-cut you should restore it. If it’s been cut already and it’s just a frame and engine you have more less expensive options.

If you have the rest of the bike keep it whole and restore it to original condition at least thats what I would do and just be patient till you find a newer model to chop

Well, the bike is not complete it is but it isn't.Not the original seat.fork tubes.tail light.Speedo and Tach are missing as well as signals and markers,no chain guard so if I do make it origianal it would be with after market parts. When I figure out how to resize my photo's I will post a pic.

I say make it your bike. No one else is gonna ride it and you payed the money for it. I own a motorcycle shop and sometimes i find myself criticizing what customers spend thier money on.But then i realize it is their money and thier bike, i am not gonna be riding it or even looking at it everyday. So i just say "make it your bike".

define crazy. ;D Many thing to consider. Do you want a stock 70' XS? (seems not) Can it be passed on for a nice profit? Are you sure you want a "chopped" XS. On and on.......... This forum will give you a very different answer then if you posted the same question on, say, The Chopper Underground. What is your investment and are you willing to invest a considerable amount more, knowing the end product will have very little chance of return? Here is my decided solution to the exact question I was asking myself a couple months back. Do all the things you would do to the bike if you were "chopping" it short of frame alterations. Then ride it! ALOT! By the time you have fixed all the week links in your 70' XS you will know if you want invest more with frame work, tail section ect. By week links I meen. Neck bearings, fork upgrade, brakes, tires charging system ignition, carbs, ect. There are lots of things to do before you start taking it apart. Making it work first is always the way to go. Otherwise it may never work and become another project for sale. I'm going to make a tracker seat and bars, put on smaller turn signals and ride it for now.
