Hey guys, I am from BC Canada and was curious on how to insure a ''u built'' bike. I have papers for the motor vin number but no papers for my frame. The frame is custom built (i dont know from where) but it has a vin number on it. Can a guy insure a bike just off the engine vin? I was reading on a u built page on the internet and it says nothing of signal lights. I have seen many a custom sled including alot of 650's that do not have signal lights. Does a custom built bike even require signal lights? If anyone has any info about this stuff or a link I could look at or something I would be really happy. Thanks guys. Sixx50Boy

It sounds like the frame is an XS frame that had the suspension hacked off the back. Not a custom built frame but modified stock frame so the authorities are going to want a title to assure it is not stolen. There may be a way to apply for a lost title in BC. Whatever you do do not give the VIN to the authorities until you know the procedure. You do not want the VIN flagged as a problem on the bureau computer system or your motorcycle impounded.
Most areas require bikes made in the 70's and certainly in the 80's have turn signals. Sometimes you can get away with none but it is always one more reason to be pulled over and get busted. I have three bikes that should have turn signals but do not. I use hand signals.

I know its not a 650 frame for sure because when I got it, it had no motor mounts and I had to modify it a bit to fit my engine. I think its a frame that a company built for almost any application you know how paugcho makes frames like that and some other companies.

Call C&S cycle in Richmond 604 2709151. They will be able to tell you what you want to know. It may be not what you want to hear, but will set you off in the right direction. I am not too sure about insuring with out a frame # because that is what the authorities go by, not engine #. Signals are required, and so is the idiot light that tells you they are working. Go to this site, gives all info. www.bclaws.ca/EPLibraries/bclaws_new/document/ID/freeside/26_58_01#part_division4

My frame has an 8 digit VIN that looks like this CHHxxxx1. The X's are for privacy purposes. I dont know how to go about finding what this is or what kind of frame I have. Most VIN's are 17 digits. Like I said this frame came with no motor mounts so It is like a universal frame or something I am thinking.
