Want it free? 78-79 factory manual with supplements going to the end of production and most owners' manuals as well are available at www.biker.net , and the engine section applies to everything from 74 forward. I wouldn't recommend pitching the Clymer's book for most folks, as it includes some basic background material that the factory manual assumes.

I know you can download em free but im talking about having a paper book, which is what I want. I understand the convenience of downloading service info but I think that to much has been lost to the easy of technology. Im the kind of person who wants to hold it in their hands the way it was before computers.... Plus I have a friend who runs a bike shop up here who has an original factory service book and Ive read through it and it provides SOOOO much more info, and the info is so much better organized than the F`n clymers..... But I guess it is good to keep em just to have different perspectives on service procedures.

Yep, gotta have hard copy. The material at biker.net is in pdf, so just print off one copy for study and one for the shop, punch some holes, and stick 'em in binders. Voila--paper books.

I just looked up the shop manual for my '78 on that site - $93, lol. Those people are nuts and so is anyone who buys from them. You can get an original manual off eBay for around $20 usually. The free PDF versions are OK in a pinch but the photos suck big time on all the versions I've seen. I got my manual, used but in good shape, all the way from Alaska for $18.

I've had my factory manual and an illustrated parts breakdown, gotta say I love em both. The local Yamaha shop gave me an IPB when they went to micro fiche... yes... a long, long time ago...

They can charge anything they want for a repop book cuz you cant get a new one anywhere else. Its one of those we have it, you want it, so gimme your left testicle... Just like the guy who runs my local motorcycle junk yard.

I have picked up off Ebay books covering 70 to 80. I think I paid the most for the book that covers 70-74. $35 plus shipping. The supplements for 78, 78E, 79, 80 where $20 plus. I'd like to get the books to cover 81 and up too. I have the Clymer book. I'm gonna get the Haynes book to. With that Any one who say's "my book says" I'll have the book and can see what they are talking about. I like a book. There is something about having a book in your hands that just feels right. Downloading and printing out a book works but uses lot of paper and ink. On my cheapy all in one it took three ink cartridges to print out a 60 some page oil book. At $20 a pop for ink I could have bought two books. Just printing out some pages to carry out to the garage is one thing, the whole book is another.
