Nice bike... complete too. Shame to cut it up. What did you pay for it if you don't mind me asking?

Just got it today. Im ready to start building my first bike. That's like taking your cat to the vet to have it "fixed". The bike is already built. You're going to break it, not build it.

I build hot rods for many years. I have had many stock bikes. I want to challenge myself with a vision i have had for a bobber. This bike is perfect for what i want to do. I'll cut up anything to make it the way i want. I build the stuff for me, know one else.

Well that's your choice, but I should tell you that there are people out there that are buying bikes built in the 70s for speculation. They figure as fast as the vintage xs is being cut up it’s only a matter of time when there will be no more. The way the stock market is these days a stock clean XS with a 447 engine will probably return your investment better than any other investment over the same amount of time.
75-77 were probably some of the best XS bikes built, so taking one out of commission would be a shame when there are so many other bikes that would accomplish the same goal for a lot less money and be just as nice when they are finished. That’s my opinion. I’m sure your bike will be really nice, I know I have seen some really nice bobbers out there.

I would say it's a win-win situation. You chop your bike, enjoy the process and drive something you like, while at the same time there will be less and less original bikes and the value of those bikes go up. But I do agree with richard in a way, if you could find something that is already 'chopped' or a basketcase, you slipp 'destroying' a good bike.

Hideous or gorgeous is all in the eyes of the beholder. As far as meandering, this forum is meant to be read by anyone who decides to look, and I haven't seen anyone hassling anybody since I signed up. Maybe a few intense debates, but everyone seems to respect everyone else's way of doing things even if they aren't the same. Doesn't mean they have to agree. It's an XS650 forum, of course there will be purists. Might wanna put the Red Bull down, take a calming breath and 'meander' around the site yourself a bit. You might find it interesting. As far as the bobber project, good luck with it and post some shots as you go along if you can. I'll stick with my stocker and watch the resale value go up (assuming it doesn't get stuffed by SoccerMom on her cellphone). I'm a purist and I just wished the guy luck. See how that works?

The Sawzall set has a way of arguing from what rhetoricians call the "false alternative," turning a complex question into an either/or: if someone doesn't approve of modifications that impair the function of the machine, he's a "purist." It may news to the Jesse James/OCC wannabe's with their lookalike hardtails, but some people modify extensively for purposes other than posing.
