I was searching the net looking for a way to verify the float levels on my xt1b carbs on the bike when I ran across a Carburetor guide in PDF form written by Grizld1 and 5twins.
I just wanted to than you guys for all being so helpful and your effort in writing a first rate guide. One of the nice things about having a XS650 is all the help you can get when you’re fixing it up form guys like you and the others here that make that all possible. Guides like that don’t happen without effort and consideration and I appreciate that, thanks

Thank you for the kind words, Richard. A carb guide of some sort was sorely needed for this bike. You would think that an old design vertical twin would have simple carbs that were easy to tune. The 650's carbs aren't that complex but they were changed and refined so many times during the production run that a good reference source was needed. The info was all out there, it just needed to be gathered together. The Guide has been out for a couple years now. We may add an update soon. I've learned even more about them since and had a chance to "lay hands" on more sets from different years. I've tuned, rebuilt, and/or run every set since '76 now. I've also collected up many more good pictures to help with explaining things. Speaking of which, I got good float setting pics now. On the 38s, since there is no main jet tower between the float halves, you can place a steel rule on the far side and sight across the tops of both "bulbs" to check the setting. You should do this from both sides to make sure the float isn't tweaked or twisted (very common). Here's the floats on some '76-'77 carbs set at 25mm .....

Thanks 5twins I orderd ne #45 jets for it so I will be looking at them again which will be a good time to check the float levels too. it run pretty good but there's a little miss in there at idle from time to time I just have to sort out. It's nothing really but it's bugging me. I guess I weird that way. :-)
