I shot this today. This is starting it from cold. I was really suprised it fired on the first kick. I'm still sorting it out because it should run smoother.
This is how it run when it's warmer up.
I seems to start easier when it's cold. Once it is running it runs out clean but I'm still working the bugs out. it's getting close.
The points are those that came with it but they were like new so I used them. Now one side is starting to pit so I'll change it to see if that helps

Richard, Your bike looks great, nice shop too. Makes me smile cause when I bought my XS I didn't have SH%$ for tools. Probably grounded that first point R&R with a borrowed screwdriver and feeler gage. I know you're looking for an opinion on how it sounds, but that's difficult cause I don't know what it was taching. Sounds solid to me, I don't hear anything I'd be concerned with. I think with youtube and my very decent computer speakers the cold idle sounded good. It's been such a long time since I set one up, but I'd let her run on the choke just a bit longer. Warm she sounded like she was running a little high in the RPM's, but I've always taken my idle down pretty low. Being honest, I hope mine sounds that solid when I fire it up. Yo, Rod

Nothing sweeter sounding than the old XS1 long rod with the 256 cam actuating the valves, that thump lick just hits ya right in the chest Had to put my 144mm long rod motor on hold for two years, so hopefully by this time next it'll be running in the motor stand. Richard you have one gorgeous looking XS1

Thanks guys.
For me it’s the same feeling every time I rebuild an engine when it’s first running you here every little thing you worked on tapping and clicking and it sounds about right but you always wonder if it’s good enough. Then after it the first oil change you don’t worry as much because it’s been running a while. I shot some video of it running down the road but the wind was so loud you couldn’t hear the engine or the shifting. so I just posted the two videos with it running. I’m still sorting out the idle rpm when it’s warm it idles around 1200 which is a little high for my tastes, but if I turn it down I have to run the choke longer when it’s cold. I guess that wouldn’t hurt. Most of the bikes I’ve worked on were assorted dirt bikes, 2 Triumphs, a BMW, a 4 cylinder Kawasaki and 3 old Harleys that started out in a box. This bike is a lot different in many ways than any of them and it has a sound like nothing I have ever heard but, I like it. :-)
