My newest project!! Believe it to be a 71 xs1b? The bike was complete, but alot of surface rust. Looks to be original, but i'm no expert. Any prestart advice would be much appreciated. Thanks, Mick Attachments:

Wow what a score! It looks pretty original to me and clean for most of the XS1Bs I have seen. I have an XS1B but it has an XS2 front end on it. It's rare to see one that close to being complete.

Thanks! Traded a clean, but blown up DS7 for it. Want to clean the sump on the motor, but after removing all bolts the cover is stuck. Tried tapping it to no avail. Don't want to force it. Any tips? Thanks, Mick Attachments:

Mine was kind of hard to take off too. I think I ended up using a snap-on gasket scraper that is like a thick puddy knife under one corner. I popped it with a small hammer and it came right off gasket and all.

Tips from the laziest man alive.
Squirt motor oil into the sparkplug hole then kick with the plugs out to blow the excess out. This gets the top piston ring and both valve stems lubed up for the first start. There have been rare cases of a valve hanging and getting bent.
Dribble motor oil down the throttle cable so it works very smooth. You don't want the throttle sticking wide open the first time you try to ride the bike down the street! Lube the clutch and brake cables too.
Spray every nut and bolt, Every screw, every joint, everything except the paint with penetrating oil. Don't worry about the mess as p-oil cleans up easy. This small step will give a lot of reward when you have to remove hardware.
Chrome cleaner works better than I ever thought it would.
Pull the grease nipples for the swing arm and stick the little red tube of the penetrating oil all the way inside. Spray as you are pulling it out and make a mess. Grease is a sponge that carries oil for lubrication. Grease gets dry and hard and new grease can't flow into the swingarm. The oil you sprayed inside will migrate through the old grease to soften it so the new grease can flow inside, plus the P-oil helps getting the arm apart when you want to change out the floppy plastic bushings for bronze. You may do this more than once.
Remove the mixture screw from the side of the carb and stick the little red tube of carb cleaner inside, spray. Remove the drain plug from the bottom of the float bowl and spray up inside. Spray more inside the mixture screw hole now that the initial spray has had time to work. If you are very lucky the carb cleaner will blast the dried gas plug out of the idle jet and you may not need to take the carbs off.
