OK, the idea of 'repacking ' my exhausts (baffles shot) is not looking so practical.
If I cut the exhausts (before the crossover) would I be able to install an aftermarket muffler WITHOUT interfering with the center stand?
Alternately, would older headers (longer) be a better way to go?

Well, here's what i did with my '81/H. I cut off the stock mufflers, including the crossover and installed EMGO Dunstal 27" replicas. The headers on these bikes are double walled, so you can't just clamp a new muffler onto the out side pipe. You have to use an adapter that connects the new 1 1/2" muffler to the inner pipe of the header: Here is an "Xray" view of that: Here is the final view; The outer pipe on the header is not designed to flow any exhaust pressure, and in fact, there are drain holes in the outer pipe and the weld at the cylinder flange leaks.
