Hey:
The baffles on the mufflers on the 81 Special I got recently are shot. The finish on the mufflers themselves is OK, just louder than I'd like.
The muffler end caps are also gone, or removed by previous owner (estate sale).
Can the mufflers be repacked, assuming I can fashion / buy replacement end caps? Otherwise, I'll look into used OEM replacements; rather not have to fuss with rejetting, etc.
Thanks!

Well, the mufflers on my '81/H were shot as well when I got the bike so I replaced them with EMGO 27" Dunstall Replicas reverse cones (8084051 $69 ea at Dennis Kirk) and I did not have to rejet for the mufflers, although I did change the main jets to 135's just on general principles as the BS34's are very lean due to the EPA mandates. If you end up replacing your mufflers, do not just clamp the new mufflers to the outside of the headers as the headers are double walled and the outer pipe is not leak proof. There are a couple of drain holes in the outer pipe and the weld at the cylinder flange is not perfect. I used an adapter like this one to allow me to clamp the new muffler to the adapter and have the small diameter of the adapter fit the inner pipe. Here is the setup: And this is what they look like and sound like:
