Many years ago, I had a bike with factory made 4" extensions that screwed into the top of the tubes in place of the OEM caps. I was wondering if anyone else has had anything like that and if it would be safe enough. Of course, the joining took place between the triple tree clamps. I was thinking of machining another set for my Yammy.

It would work I guess , until they broke and split the tubes. That's what used to happen.

If so, maybe welding the extensions to the tubes would be better. The only thing there is, I'm not sure if the weld would be the correct tensile strength which could crack.

I will mention again, that I am no motorcycle expert. I have though, spent 20yrs as a tool and die maker. What I know about tool steel, welding them would not be a good idea. At best, you would have to know what kind of metal they are made of, then would need a talented welder to do the work, one that understands metals and there make up very well. Once you have reached this point, it would probably be as cheap or cheaper to just buy extended fork tubes. IMO, I would not use extensions at all, cruising down the road is a bad place to find out that it doesn't work. I realize that people may disagree with me, but from my experience working with many different steels and alloys, any splice or weld, is a weak point.

I guess I was just grabbing for straws since extended forks are almost impossible to find. Mike's XS has had them on back order for months. Thanks for making up my mind for me.

Igya, I have a pair of +4 fork tubes from MikesXS, and wish I would have bought +2. What size are you looking for? I have installed my +4's, but have less than 5miles on them. If you are interested, maybe we could work something out?

Guys I may be really dating myself here but, Forking by Frank used to be the place to go for any kind of forks. Maybe they're still around. Skimmer

Skimmer, You dated yourself bro ... Gotta say I remember his ads well though, wasn't it a pic of a front end with the springs exposed?
Definitely agree with mudi on the no-freakin-way on the weld thing too. Wouldn't go with the screw in extensions either ... have to admit I'd be too afraid to do it.
I have a set of extended 6" (?) forks from my 75' and a bunch of brand new disc brake stuff and chrome legs if anyone is interested, let me know. Yo, Rod
