I've decided I like it loud, too. OEM bike horns just don't sound a warning that cagers take seriously, and at highway speeds with wind noise, windows up, sound sytems on, cell phones in ears, etc., most bike horns aren't even audible. I just finished running a 30A relay (tripped by original horn leads) through a 10A fuse straight off the battery to a pair--one high tone, one low--of Fiamm HK9 3.75" disc horns. They're the loudest thing I've heard on any vehicle short of a big rig air horn, really rowdy, touch the button in a closed garage and they'll make your ears ring. Cost was $32 US for horns, $7 for relay, $4 for fuse holder, all off the shelf at Advance Auto, with ring and spade connectors, solder, wire, and bracket makings out of the stash.

The friendly folks at hillside performance in munnsville NY were nice enough to GIVE me a horn when they found out i wasn't running one. It got added after i redid the wiring for the 3rd time(wish i was better and got it right the first time). I detuned it to make the ugliest noise possible, I just think its funny.
The loud pipes may have negative conotation withthose who enjoy thier quiet time, and I won't make any argument about them making you more noticable. My truck has a sterio you'll hear in your vehicle... But what i will defend is that liking loud engines isn't something you just "grow out of". you'll find that true dyed in the wool gearheads of many kinds just never get over the wonderful sound of a open exhaust.
My fathers in his 50s and still runs drag pipes on his '59 pan. Its one of the most beautiful noises i know of.

Well, back on topic... I ran my XS for about a month with open header pipes before I started trying to quiet it back down a bit. But what you need to do, as others have stated, is increase the fuel coming in, the way I did this, as suggested by a coworker at the nearby Yamaha dealer I was working at, was to pull the carbs apart, and pull the needles from the slides, and add a few small washers to the needle, to raise it up. Through trial and error, I found that 3 thin washers meant for #4 screws per side worked fantastically to acheive zero lean popping, and keep from fouling plugs. Now I'm in the process of building my own 2-1 glasspack system using the stock headers, a Y pipe from a Yamaha Raider, and the outer chrome muffler shell off of a 1980 Honda CB, as well as the baffle from a YZ-F450, a custom machined reverse cone end cap, and some new fiberglass packing.

If my nabours have a problem with the noise I envite them over to tell me ,they dont give a sh!# when Im sleeping with their car alarms blowen and all the other cr@# they do. LOUD is good. I dont have to ride with the throtel cracked wide open in the early hours!I try to be as quiet as I can in the nabourhood. But after that LOUD LOUD LOUD!!! HA HA HA!! I think the first thing Dave needs to work on is getting an education so that his grammar (and IQ) would surpass that of a dung beetle. He almost makes me ashamed to own an XS!

Well ..... I always wondered how any one could expect help with their problem if they couldn't present it in a clear and concise manner. sixxfiftyboy, your keyboard has a Cap key - use it. And the heck with Dave, he's gone. That happens all the time with these 650s - people come and go. If you're really serious about the bike, you'll stick around and ask about your problems in a short, concise manner. I know, it seems I'm nit-picking but this is probably my biggest beef with these lists - the fact that some of these people couldn't write their way out of a paper bag let alone ask for help in an intelligent manner.
I just don't answer those posts anymore unless it's just to ridicule their lack of grammar. What you put out here is on the World Wide Web - THE WHOLE WORLD CAN READ IT ...... Doesn't it bother you that they may think you're stupid and, above all, ILLITERATE ? Apparently not because these posts just keep on coming, lol.

Indeed. Thought for the Day for the the "louder and prouder" set: The highways are full of borderline psychopaths in large vehicles who live one irritation away from full-bore road rage. Helmets save lives. Loud pipes make targets.
