Hey I ran straight headers when I was younger. Some people rolled up their windows when I rolled up between their cars. I can only pray that I didn't traumatize them too much. You're only young once. Just don't run junk... get a set of decent headers, tune you're freakin' bike and have fun. Cops love em loud... Bwup Bwup BBwwwwaaaaaaa... Yo, Rod

The problem with really loud pipes is that they serve no purpose but to get people pissed off at motorcycles. You are going to screw it up for the rest of us when legislation comes into play and enforcement gets bad. NYC is about to initiate a program where bikes are confiscated if they don't have DOT approved mufflers. The problem is NO MUFFLERS and old bikes with perfectly good, but not super quiet, replacement mufflers are going to get nailed.

"All" your bikes, Dave? I guess you're an experienced, hardcore biker guy who knows all the answers already and was asking newbie questions just to be sociable. BTW, the tuning issues are flow (volume and velocity), diameter, and resonant length. "Backpressure" is a catchall term that's used by those who know only when they don't want to take the time to explain basic concepts to people who aren't going to understand them anyway, and by those who don't know when they talk about exhaust system issues in general.

Dave, I'm sorry if I offended you earlier, but IMHO you came across as kind of obnoxious and seeming like you didn't really care about who YOU offended or bothered with your "LIKE IT LOUD!" stance. Granted, I like a good-sounding bike as much as the next guy, but on some bikes, open pipes just do not sound that good, and need a little muffling to get that good "tone", and still sound good without making people run to get some earplugs. To me XS's don't sound that good un-muffled. Not near as good as a Triumph. Some might disagree, but that's just me. Along time ago, I had an XS2 and took off the mufflers to look and sound cool. The bike ran like crap, and was very annoying to the ears, especially on the highway. If you live in the country, and want to run your bike like that, go for it. No harm, no foul! 8-)I think you'll be causing more harm than good, in more ways than one. Anyway, happy riding and hope you find that tuned-length nirvana you're looking for. Jay

all, i just bought a bike that has a stock exhaust chopped at about the gear shift. i bought it at a huge discount becasue it had a melted top end. the reason the top end melted is because the bike ran very lean for too long. point of the story is that short open headers are loud but if not properly jetted (maybe not possible here) you will have issues with power/longevity.

I'll add a little to the fire. LOL
Having a little louder than stock exhaust can be a safety feature. I am surprised no one brought this up. The louder pipes will make you heard by the motorist talking on his/HER cell phone and not looking in thier mirrors while changing lanes. Being heard has its benifits also. Remember those 4 wheelers are out to kill us. They might not see you hopefully they will hear you.
But there is a limit, there is a such thing as toooo loud.

I don't think that's true. even if they know your there they still don't see you. I was driving along a section of road through town where there was a center turn, two driving lanes and a right turn lane. As I was going along in the left driving lane the traffic ahead was slowing down, the car beside me had a woman on a cell phone, she started to move into my lane , I blew my horn, she looked right at me and smiled, but kept right on coming over. Good thing I didn't have a gun, oops I mean room to move into the turn lane. Some people shouldn't be allowed to breathe.

Right you are, Leo. A fat 20-something with a cell phone stuck in her ear looked right at me and hauled her SUV out of a grocery store lot in front of me earlier this week. I got to find out how good my brakes and tires really are. Back in the day I used to carry a 12" adjustable wrench in the inside pocket of my leather jacket for situations like you described. All you have to do is show it to 'em. Modern textile gear doesn't have a place to pack an object like that, but I'd bet you can come up with a way to attach one for quick deployment. And after all, how ya gonna get that rear axle nut loose in an emergency without a nice piece of pipe?

On one of the bike build off shows Billy Lane put a loop on the left side of the bike to hang a very large ball peen hammer. Even chromed the head. Maybe I need to something similar.
