Thanks! I'm really loving the bike, and it is so much fun to ride. It still has the original paint on the tank and sidecovers, and some pits in the chrome, but just has that nice old bike look about it.

I traded a Suzuki for this Monday, and swapped the bars and seat already. Other than a front tire, full maintenance and some detailing, just leaving it as it is. before: after: so much nicer.

Sweet.......got a 78 just like it. Getting rid of the rototiller bars makes a world of difference. Looks like a very nice example...enjoy!

I had some leftover parts from my '75 project, so decided to use them for some light mods on the '79 to give it more of a roadster look. I shortened a stock seat pan to fit a Suzuki TC90 replacement seat cover. Here is the finished seat with the stock TC90 seat. I cut a section out and welded back together the '75 fender. I cut up the '75 light/plate bracket and welded it back together and fitted a reproduction Lucas light. The fender is from a '69 Yamaha DS6C. I had to weld tabs to mount it. Mocked up, using the '75 gas tank. Getting prepped for paint. The new fenders painted and installed, but with the '79 Special tank. I still plan on using the '75 tank, but need to paint it. I'm collecting parts for a spoke wheel conversion later on.

Thanks for the update! That d**n seat looks great! Coupl'a q's for you. Was the pan from a '75, or is it a Special pan? What foam did you use? One you made? What are the pins through the seat pan, for retaining the cover? Rivets? The chrome dress ups for the rear signal mounts? Great ideas. G Man

It is a Special model pan, and the stock foam shaved down. I shortened the pan and welded in a new piece for the back of it. The sides were also trimmed up a bit. The pins are machine screws. I drilled holes for them, then welded the heads on the top side so they wouldn't spin. Here they are with the nuts just started as the cover is being pulled into place. The rear turn signal mounts are from the '75.

With my '75 done and riding I'm doing some more mods to the '79 Special. '71 Yamaha CT-1 tank, '72-'73 Kawasaki G5 seat, and spoke wheel/drum rear brake swap with Shinko SR241 tires. I'm not sure if this is the front fender I'll be using.

Thanks! I'm looking at three options for the exhaust right now. The first is a set of Gordon Scott left side high pipes. They look incredible, but kinda hard on the budget. The second is the TC Bros choppers exhaust builders kit, and make my own high pipes. The third option is probably the best as far as practicality and price, which is to use some stock standard model head pipes I already have, and get some small slip-on mufflers with a slight up-sweep. Right now I'd have to say I'm going with number three, but hopefully get the Gordon Scott pipes eventually.
