Was Driving home in freezing weather got to a roundabout and NOTHING lost all power would not start called AA after 1 hour 20 minutes AA chap turns up No spark called recovery van 1 hour 45 minutes later it turns up really cold now -3 feet numb hands also. get the bike on the truck and drive home. Bike now in the garage inspect the points noticed the centre cam is loose turned the cam with my fingers and BANG cylinder fires I left the ignision on this tells me the electrics are fine. go to the ATU take the cover off and the ATU is in pieces. Just got the bike a week ago. seems that one of the springs were missing from the ATU and small steel pin was ripped out , back plate bent, toothed retaining nut damaged. Could not source one from local dealer managed to get an OEM parts from Mikes XS. All the best Alex from the UK is this common or was I just unlucky

Alex, it's all too common for the pivot pin to fail in the ATU from Mike's XS. They know the problem and following their usual practice they won't correct it until the defective parts are sold out, if then. But the OE units cause grief too, and my own postmortems of XS650 motors with holed pistons have turned up a defective ATU in every one of them. You might consider an aftermarket ignition with electronic advance. My favorite is the ignition from Probe Engineering. I haven't used Pamco, but reports have been very favorable. I have used Boyer; the timing plate is flimsy and prone to warping, and when that happens the rotor can brush against the circuit board and make a mess.
