My brother is a musician and he has a bunch of sound equipment that is controlled by an IPad wirelessly. In his IPad is a spectrum analyzer App he downloaded for $14 bucks. It works and captures all frequencies in real time at any point in time. On it each frequency can be shown as vertical lines running horizontally across the screen in milliseconds or whatever time designation you chose. The read out can also be shown as a vertical bar graph in frequencies and a number of other types of graphs. Seeing that got me thinking about tuning motorcycles and how sound is used in engine tuning. If you had a captured baseline sound profile at specific RPMs on a well tuned bike. You could tune an identical bike( XS1B for example) to match that captured the sound profile of a well tuned bike at low , mid and high RPM range then once you're done you would have a perfectly tuned bike, theoretically. The thing is the Spectrum analyzer if it is sensitive enough should be able to pick up a changes in pitch frequency if your jetting is rich or lean at any specifying point in the RPM range and, Frequencies that we might not be able to hear. Anyway something to think about. I'll try to get some screen shots of the analyzer when I get the chance.

Ever tried a stethoscope with a probe on it? They'll pick up enough noise and clatter to scare anyone into considering a rebuild.

Yeah I never did get back to this subject, but it seems interesting. If you have a perfectly tuned bike as your nominal standard, then if you can tune your bike to sound exactly the same as it, it should run perfect also. When I hear an engine running I hear all kinds of things, crank, valve train and all. The spectrum analyzer gives a visual representation of what I hear in the form of lines and graphs with individual frequencies noted in numerical form for each sound. I just thought that was really cool!

The subject of stereo mics interests me, but for a different reason. I'd rig them up to go along with a nice ride video. Kick back with the phones on, fullscreen the vid and enjoy. Trouble is, everyone's using GoPro cameras, which make almost any action shots turn into digital rubber. Can't stand them. Oh well, so much for THAT idea.
