Has anybody tried to fit an O ring 530 chain onto a standard1977 d type bike. It looks like there is plenty of clearance around the gearbox sprocket but I thought I`d check first before I buy. Also would a 520 fit on standard sprockets.
Thanks for any info chris r

Chris, to answer your first question, I haven't run anything but O-ring and X-ring chains for the last 30 years. To answer your second question--uh, no. To find out why, Google "drive chain pitch" and do some reading.

Thank for the reply, only some bikes ive had have a very narrow gap between gearbox and clutch. Not to mention chain gaurds.
The other chain I meant to say was a 525 as my sprocket measures 6.8mm and a 525 has a roller width of 7.2mm. Maybe a bit too tight. I`ll use the 530`s
Thanks chris r

If you change the chain you have to change the sprocket too. You can run the 520 chain with 520 sprockets front and back if weight is a factor, but most people run the 530 because greater surface area of the bigger chain equals greater strength. That is with all other factor being equal. If you run a 530 chain and change to one tooth more on the front sprocket clearance of the front metal guard is a problem and people remove it to keep the chain from sawing into it. Most people have no problem running O-ring chains. There is plenty of reading out there on the net on this subject along with many opinions. If you want more detail on clearance issues and tooth count that would be a good place to start. Here's one. www.xs650.com/forum/showthread.php?t=14513and here www.xs650.com/forum/showthread.php?t=12528 There are many others. The sprockets and chains can be had at 650 Central, MikesXS, Heiden Tuning and many others.

Blacklav I have aftermarket shocks and had to "work" the stock chainguard where it passes behind the shock. Then I installed an o-ring chain and had interference issues.
