Not sure if I`m on the right thread here as its a painting problem. Has anybody painted over chrome. Ive got a front and rear guard that are damaged and rusty. Can I sand the chrome to give a key, then filler followed by primer etc . I want them painted to match my tank colour. Thanks chris r

If you can get them grit blasted prior to paint this will remove all the loose chrome and corrosion, talk to your local powdercoater, he might be able to do this and put a primer coat on them then all you need is to colour & laquer.
Once the chrome starts bubbling, ideally it all needs to come off, just sanding & painting won't last long, you'll just trap the problem under the new paint and it'll come through in no time.

Thanks Max, will try the powdercoat man for info. The rust on them is only small spots, but its what's underneath that going to come through later I suppose. I don't suppose they are still available to buy new.

Maybe check out Eastwood's powder coat kit, it does work pretty good. I've cheated the chrome on a few bits and pieces (front engine mount and taillight bracket) with the 'chrome' powdercoat and doesn't look bad at all. Also used clear and black here and there and so far no rust has returned. Just make sure you do a good glassbead job and have ZERO lint on the piece otherwise you will see it...permanently. Especially the chrome coating.

A D with 34's? I've seen some odd stuff, but I've never seen or heard of that. In North America and as far as I know Europe as well the D was the first year for 35 mm. forks and single piston floating caliper. Did Yamaha keep the 34's in Asia or Oz?

Its a D alright. A U.S. import with 35mm and twin disc`s, it also has an oil lamp warning above the neutral light. I think this is of another model as there is no sensor for this anywhere. Its wired to come on when the brakes are on for some strange reason.

Thanks Max, I was going to disconnect it, but now I know its normal !! I see you have a 750 kit, what's it like? and would you recommend the upgrade. Mine needs a rebore anyway, and I`m thinking the cost of rebore plus pistons, it may be worth it going for the 750 kit. Where did you get yours from or who do you recommend. Thanks chris r

Thanks chris r Chris I got my kit from Jerry Heiden in Holland about 6 years ago when the £ was a bit better against the Euro and he had a special offer on, pistons & gaskets are all Athena in my kit so decent quality, new ones appear to be Wiseco pistons. Would I recommend? Yes but I'd do things slightly different next time like get some paint on the barrels before fitting and use different gaskets, by all acounts the ones supplied are slightly thicker than std so you get a corresponding compression drop (not much) but all in all I'm happy. When my SR500 is done (don't hold your breath) I intend to pull the motor on the XS for a camshaft swap and while I'm in there fit some thinner copper gaskets, probably from 650Central. Advice - check the number on your conrods before ordering as you don't want the wrong pistons (long rod V's short rod), yours should be a 447 with 256 cast into the rods? Also, I believe std barrels can be bored to 707cc safely, not sure where the pistons are available in UK/Europe though. On the road impressions are good, I still haven't got my carbs 100% but close enough, she pulls up to 115 without problems and that's with me sitting bolt upright (I've got Z900 bars fitted). 750 Euro's, not cheap but recommended. Uh, Max, if you see 256 cast into the rod it's for the 70-73 motor--longer, with 22 mm. wrist pin. The rod for the 447 motor (74-82) has 447 cast into it.

Griz I might be having a senior moment here but I'm absolutely certain that the number on my rods wasn't 447 and it's deffo a 447 motor and had never been apart until I opened the top end up (but it was about 6 years ago) Senility here we come? Don't go there, Max, you're scaring me. I'm hoping for something clean and fast like a massive and fatal stroke or coronary before I wind up addled and diapered in a nursing home while the "care" industry sucks the family assets dry.
