Could you be more specific with your symptoms? Does it go into any gears, can you find neutral? You should be able to roll the cluster and go through all the gears. The other thing is that linkage/drum selector that’s (not shown) is adjustable, you could have bent it out of adjustment to where it’s slipping or not hooking up on the drum spur.

Are you trying to shift it while the motor is not running? Many times, they won't shift like that, the shafts need to be turning. Try turning the rear wheel while you work the shift lever.

Just the broken spring should not present those kind of problems but, that spring does hold the gears in position as you are going down the road so without the spring you gear selection will drift with the vibration. There may be more to it than just the spring. Something may have happened that caused the drum to kick back and break the spring. When you have problems just putting it into gears it’s usually a linkage adjustment or worse a bent shift fork or bearing. So my next question would be when you try to put it in gear does it grind or does it just go it hard? Try it without the bike running and rock the rear tire as you do it. I would also check your oil filter for pieces. You could have a bearing out on one of the shafts too. Did you find all the spring pieces?

There's a claw on the end of the shift shaft that engages the pins on the star-shaped plate in your photo. There's also a cam with a slotted head under a lock nut that aligns the claw. See the service manual, Engine section, at www.biker.net for instructions on adjustment. The cam turns very hard, even with the lock nut loose; use a wrench on a square shank screw driver. If adjustment there doesn't get the job done you'll need to have a look inside.
